Producer C.J. Plays – Artist Profile

Artist Name: C.J. Plays
Musical Genre: Hip Hop
City or Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Producer C.J. Plays is so incredibly skilled and masterful at his craft, it’s hard to believe that someone so talented would give up on their dream profession.

But C.J. did give up. Twice.

As fate would have it a significant charm was in the cards for the Georgia native’s third act.

C.J. produced “I Am”, the slapping single by Epic Records hip-hop act Alex Harris. Released July 10, 2020, it was C.J.’s first major label placement.

C.J. began making music 25 years ago. For two-and-a-half decades he honed his abilities, techniques, and proficiencies all while hoping to work with a major label.

Born in Atlanta, C.J. spent his formidable years in Muskegon, MI. A lifetime hip-hop fan, his life was changed by Midnight Marauders, A Tribe Called Quest’s classic 1993 album. Listening to it repeatedly with astonished creative curiosity, the LP inspired C.J. to make music of his own.

As his devoted time progressed, he developed a reputation for electrical chords and shockingly remarkable drum tracks. His decision to produce for various artists would lead to local and regional success.

In 2001 C.J. returned to GA where he eventually took his second break from breaks. Following that hiatus, his rejuvenated return to music was propelled by greater competence, career clarity, and self-motivated desire to prove himself definitively to himself.

On this third run C.J. became a beat battle champion, released his solo album First Place, and achieved production credits with DeLoach, DJ Jamad, Redd Lettaz, Skye Morales, and Terrance Anderson, among others. With “I Am” he cemented to himself that he was.

It’s a charming story. But don’t call it a comeback.
