Artist Name: Sundance Head
Musical Genre: Soul Country
City or Hometown: Houston, TX
Singer, songwriter and musician Sundance Head is, genuinely, one of the most soulful artists alive today. Categorized as country, the Texas native created his own his signature sound dubbed “soul country”.
“I cut my teeth on Motown and soul music,” Sundance said. “I really wanted to be a blues singer growing up in Houston”.
In order to get into the Texas music scene, Sundance said “I had to figure out how to play country music. I wasn’t traditionally country. So, we came up with our own genre – ‘soul-country’. My whole purpose is to be able to speak to and perform to everyone. Plus, I wanted to sing like Marvin Gaye and do falsettos like Al Green!”
Here’s what’s equally, if not more, admirable than his remarkable, from-the-heart skill set: He’s deliberately done more with his music than simply try to sell records.
Winner of ‘The Voice’ Season 11, the Texas native and his band took time to build relationships with his listeners while growing his sound. He refers to his follower as his “fam-base” because he treats them like family.
“We’re a 3-piece, and we’re just three guys playing instruments,” Sundance said. “We just play real rooted songs and give honest performance of each song. I like to talk to the crowd and get to know the people out there and make friends.
“They support us 100%,” he continued about of his fans. “They’re behind us. They help us on social media, they’re the social media warriors out there helping to spread the word.”
After cruising through the NBC competition, Sundance also paced himself creatively. He didn’t rush working on his post-victory studio album.
First, he scored a hit with his single “Leave Her Wild” before finally releasing the LP ‘Stained Glass and Neon’ in January of 2019.
“It may be the only record I do for the rest of my life,” Sundance said. “I [wanted] to make sure it has integrity and that it really means something to me. I [wanted] every song to be a great song.”
Sundance played the “Doing It to Country Songs Tour” with his ‘The Voice’ coach Blake Shelton, one of the best-selling country music artists of all time. He said he hopes to one day command a audiences as large as Blake’s.
“I watched his show every night. It never got old to me,” Sundance said. “Blake really knows how to gauge the audience and make each person feel like he’s singing directly to them, and only to them.”
For Sundance Head the more intimate settings allow him to get up-close and personal. “I like to go into towns and make friendships. That’s really important to us.”
